Globe wins Greenwich Head Race
Congratulations to Globe, who won the Head of the River and the Women’s Head of the River of the Greenwich Head 2023. Poplar had one win as well for the fastest women’s quad on handicap.
Mild weather and no wind provided perfect conditions for the annual Greenwich Head race from Wapping Pier to Greenwich Pier. Following years of Covid and bad weather that resulted in a series of cancellations it was good to see many crews from Globe, Lea, Gravesend returning to Poplar. The Greenwich Head is not without its challenges as it is rowed around many bends and corners on the Thames, with commercial traffic taken place at the same time. Looking out for the Clippers and other River traffic and dealing with the washes is part of the thrill of the Greenwich Head.
The organisers would like to thank City Cruises for providing one of their experience rib Lighting very reassuring for the umpires and crews. A big thank you to Clipper UBER and their crews for their consideration by proceeding with caution. To Wood’s Silver Fleet for access to Wapping Pier and access to the Silver Bonito for the start timing team. Thanks to Thames Marine Services for providing their work boat and crew. Thank you to the staff from Ahoy for providing two safety boats. Finally, thank you to all the umpires. We would also like to thank the PLA and VTS for their support during the organisation and on the day. Without all the help and support the event wouldn’t be possible. Thanks again to all of the river community bringing this event together to give rowers a wonderful experience.
Poplar’s bar at the clubhouse overlooking the river is the perfect venue to celebrate the successes and drown the sorrows.
