Tideway Scullers Row to Victory at the Greenwich Head

The Isle of Dogs played host to the annual Greenwich Head race on Sunday, February 16th, with 29 crews battling it out for the coveted Head of the River title. Organised by Poplar, Blackwall & District Rowing Club (PBDRC), the event saw rowers tackle a shortened course from Canary Wharf to the Poplar clubhouse, located opposite the historic Cutty Sark in Greenwich.
Despite a cold day with light, chilly winds, the competition was fierce. Tideway Scullers proved their mettle, taking home the overall Head of the River title with their open coxless four, completing the course in a blistering 8 minutes 21 seconds. They edged out local rivals Globe Rowing Club by a mere four seconds. Globe RC, however, had reason to celebrate, securing the Women’s Head of the River title with their ladies’ eight (9 minutes 32 seconds) and also claiming the fastest women’s coxless quad. Tideway Scullers further demonstrated their dominance by winning the fastest open coxless quad and open eight categories.
The rowers faced challenging conditions, with a wind-over-tide creating some rough water and the occasional Thames Clipper adding to the wash. These obstacles made the crews’ achievements all the more impressive. A well-deserved hot cup of tea and pastries was a welcome reward for all the athletes after their strenuous efforts.
PBDRC extends a huge thank you to all the volunteers who made the event possible. The club members and bar staff, umpires, launch drivers, and coaches all played a crucial role in the success of the Greenwich Head. Their dedication and hard work ensured a smooth and enjoyable race for all participants.
Our next event is the Poplar Regatta, taking place at the London Regatta Centre on the Royal Albert Dock on May 18, 2025.
