Ten Poplar athletes travelled to Henley-on-Thames to compete at this year’s Town & Visitors Regatta, in another great day out for the club.
Molly & Annika brought home a spectacular win for Poplar in the women’s doubles. An impressive heat was followed by a nail-biting final, which Poplar won by just two feet over an excellent Reading crew.
Ben also managed another win for Poplar in the open singles, after a strong row in the heat and a win of three-and-a-half lengths in the final, in both cases coming from behind in the second half of the race to secure the victory. The trophy that Ben was presented with after winning the final was last won by a Poplar sculler in 1986!
In other events Poplar athletes did the club proud. Bernarda put in a solid performance in the women’s singles. Although she didn’t win it this time, the effort was especially impressive given that she was racing out of category, as there was no masters racing in singles at the regatta. The men’s four battled hard in their heat against tough opposition, but didn’t progress to the final this time. Ben & Mo put in a creditable effort in a scratch mixed double against two very strong Henley RC crews. And Ed & Gary’s scratch double had a superb race, coming second out of three.
A really enjoyable day of racing was made even better by our supporters who came to watch, including friends, family members, and coach Gary. Looking forward to the next one!
