Pairs Head of the River 2018
Three crews represented Poplar at the Pairs Head of the River 2018 race on Saturday. This year’s competition was raced on the ebb tide, from Chiswick Bridge down to just below Hammersmith Bridge.
Ralph Humphrey raced with his composite partner Shaun Martin from Medway as a Masters C Championship double, finishing third in their category, and in an impressive 26th place overall.
Bev Reid and Johnny Dwan completed as a mixed Masters D/E double, scooping third place in their category against some really stiff competition.
Phoebe Ohene competed in a new double with Mary Merritt-Smith from Upper Thames Rowing Club for the first time, battling it out in women’s Championship doubles.
The conditions were rough and windy from the outset, with the rain only stopping in time for the crews to drive home! Nevertheless, it was a really good day of racing, and a really positive start to the winter season for the club. This is a great event for any doubles or pairs looking for a really competitive and challenging course to consider for 2019.
