On the evening of the 19th of November members and friends of Poplar Rowing Club came together to celebrate the most successful season for 20 years, and kick off the Christmas festivities. It was great to see many current and former members again, including our recent Doggett’s winners Max and George. Singer Alice provided a nice atmosphere with live music.
Following dinner the keynote speech was given by 1984 Doggett’s winner and King’s waterman Simon McCarthy, who shared his past memories with the club and its changes over the years. Club captain Dan Bartlett handed out awards to coach Garry Anness for club member of the year, this year’s Henley Town winner Ben Gliniecki as oarsman of the year, and most improved sculler George Gilbert. The highlight of the night was the presentation of life membership to former club captains Philip Skelton and Chris Spencer.
The evening got even livelier with the auction of sponsored prizes that Dan had organised, and Simon’s ‘act’ as auctioneer. Many thanks to the various club members who gave generously.
It was a dinner & dance event that will be remembered for a long time. Special thanks to Dan and Cheryl for organising such a wonderful evening. We look forward to the next event in 2023.
