Vesta Scullers Head 2023 – Race Report

Bob Milligan scored a hat trick with his third win at the Vesta Scullers Head 2023.

Bob beat his rival in the Masters H category by a mere three seconds – finishing in 24:13.
Debut contestants Vicky Rebori and Joelle Jenny crossed the finish line in respectable times and have everything to look forward to.

Vicky had the added challenge of setting off second to last, at which point the midday sun was dazzling and scores of scullers were already heading back up river (along the sidelines) to the starting point.

This was Paddy Boyle, Mo Ruddy and Lizzy Nunn’s second consecutive entry into the 7k race and each one had shaved off no less than a minute from the previous year. Mo beat her time in 2022 by almost one-and-a-half minutes and Lizzy by nearly two minutes.

Phoebe Ohene returned to the course after a break from racing and showed what it takes to prepare for a race – by bringing her earbuds to listen to music while waiting for more than an hour after boating but before the start.

The squad were cheered on from the sidelines from Gill (occasional Poplar member), Alex (Mo’s partner), Szabi (our favourite cheerleader), Jen (Poplar member on study leave) and Dave (Lizzy’s husband).

We look forward to you joining us in 2024.
